AEW Dynamite Results (07/05/2023)


MJF and Adam Cole will compete in the Blind Tag Team Eliminator Tournament, Ruby Soho will take on Britt Baker in the Owen Hart Foundation Tournament Women’s Quarterfinal, Kenny Omega will face Wheeler Yuta, and more.


The results are as follows:


Blind Eliminator Tag Team Tournament: Keith Lee & Swerve Strickland (with Mogul Embassy) vs. Orange Cassidy & Darby Allin


In a pre-match interview, Allin hypes up Lee and tries to motivate him ahead of the match. Lee walks by Strickland without looking at him during his entrance. Allin and Lee start the bout and square off. Cassidy tags in and hits Lee with some of his signature “strikes.” Lee drops Cassidy with a stiff chop. Cassidy dropkicks Lee. He hits the big man with an Orange Punch. Allin and Cassidy double-team Lee, but he won’t go down. Strickland rocks Cassidy with a kick. Swerve gains the upper hand with a flurry of offense. Allin and Cassidy double-team Strickland with a suplex.


They gang up on him and keep him isolated from Lee. Strickland takes control again. Lee and Strickland double-team Allin with a suplex/powerbomb combination. Swerve traps Allin under the steps. Cassidy dives onto Strickland at ringside. He traps Lee in a sleeper hold, and Lee walks up the steps on top of Darby. Lee counters a DDT and reverses the Stun-dog Millionaire. Cassidy hits it on a second attempt. Allin floors Lee with a Code Red.


Strickland goes to break up the pin with a 450 Splash, but he accidentally lands on Lee. Strickland accidentally drops Lee with a kick. Cassidy rocks Strickland with a diving DDT and dives onto Lee. Allin pins Swerve for the win.


Winners: Orange Cassidy & Darby Allin


A video package highlighted Nick Wayne, as Darby Allin discussed their friendship.


“Jungle Boy” Jack Perry arrives and makes it clear that he wants a shot at the FTW Championship. HOOK arrives and attacks him, and Perry escapes.


MJF and Adam Cole are shown bonding at the gym. Cole clearly isn’t into it. MJF insults one of the people at the gym, and Cole tells him he can’t talk like that, but they both compare him to Tony Schiavone.


The Acclaimed & “Daddy Ass” Billy Gunn vs. The Blade & Bollywood Boyz (Gurv Sihra and Harv Sihra)


Gunn and The Blade start the match. “Daddy Ass” gains the upper hand and double-teams Blade with Caster. Caster slams both Bollywood Boyz and takes Blade down when he tags in. The Acclaimed hit Scissor Me Timbers. They scissor with Gunn. Blade drops Caster, and he gangs up on Max with the Bollywood Boyz. Bowens makes the hot tag and clears house. Gunn tags in and slams Gurv. Caster hits the Mic Drop for the win.


Winner: The Acclaimed & “Daddy Ass” Billy Gunn


Harley Cameron interrupts the post-match celebration as she appears on the video screen. She reveals that she made a video, and she will show the world what real talent is next week. Gunn grabs a microphone and says “suck it.”


A video package highlights Eddie Kingston beating KENTA to win the NJPW STRONG Openweight Championship at NJPW STRONG Independence Day.


In a video message, Jon Moxley discusses his history with Eddie Kingston. He wonders why Kingston is mad, as they don’t live in the past. Moxley says he had a dream of a version of Kingston that became what he could be. He also tells Kingston to answer his phone.


Matt Hardy is backstage, and he learns that he and Jeff Jarrett have been paired up together in the Blind Eliminator Tag Team Tournament.


In a promo, Wheeler Yuta sends a heated message to Kenny Omega ahead of their match.


In-Ring Segment: Chris Jericho


Jericho says things haven’t been going the way he has wanted them to, so it’s time to make some changes. He looks back on his early days as a wrestler, when he competed in Alberta. Jericho recalled how he used to feel like wrestling was everything to him, and he felt reinvigorated and resurrected. Jericho says it’s time to become a better version of Chris Jericho, maybe even the best version yet. Don Callis interrupts and reminds Jericho of how he called him and pitched him the classic match with Kenny Omega. Callis takes credit for the idea, but Jericho responds by noting that he helped Callis come back to the wrestling world in the first place.


Callis says that the two of them make history when they get together. He describes how he’s building a new family, which will be based on trust. Callis says he trusts Jericho, as he’s his best friend. He asks Jericho if he will join the Don Callis Family. Jericho responds by saying he doesn’t join factions, he creates them.


A video package highlights the match between CM Punk and Samoa Joe on the July 8 episode of AEW Dynamite.


Backstage, Renee Paquette asks the trainer for an update on Roderick Strong, and he says they’re being cautious due to Strong’s history. Adam Cole arrives, and Strong tries to give him some advice. Cole gets a text from MJF, and he leaves because it’s time for his match.


Blind Eliminator Tag Team Tournament: MJF & Adam Cole vs. Matt Menard & The Butcher


Menard and The Butcher take the fight to Cole and MJF. The champion gains the upper hand and argues with Cole when he refuses to cheat. MJF gets a “do it” chant going, and Cole gives in as he helps MJF gain some extra leverage on an abdominal stretch. Menard drives MJF into the opposing corner. The Butcher hits MJF when the referee isn’t looking. The Butcher overpowers MJF. He and Menard continue to double-team the champion. MJF rallies and tags Cole, who comes in and clears house. MJF wants the tag, but Cole hits The Boom for the win.


Winners: MJF & Adam Cole


MJF grabs a microphone after the match and sets Cole up for the “Adam Cole, bay-bay” chant. He tells Cole they would have done a better job if Cole listened to him. MJF pitches another “bro session”, and Cole accepts. MJF tells Cole happy birthday, and confetti rains from the ceiling. The champion gets a “happy birthday” chant going. He brings out a cake and balloon for Cole. MJF puts on a birthday hat and makes Cole wear one. MJF sings “the birthday song”. He gets a “make a wish” chant going for Cole, and Cole blows out the candle. MJF tries to slam Cole’s face into the cake, but Cole reverses and sends MJF into the cake instead. Cole says it was nice of MJF to do all of that, and he thanks him.


In an interview, Britt Baker previews her match with Ruby Soho. She says she will always be the face of the women’s division.


Backstage, Chris Jericho elaborates on his previous comments and says Daniel Garcia and Sammy Guevara can’t be under his wing forever. Renee Paquette announces the two of them will team up in the Blind Eliminator Tag Team Tournament. Jericho tells them to use the opportunity to show which one of them can lead.


Owen Hart Foundation Tournament Women’s Quarterfinal: Ruby Soho (with The Outcasts) vs. Dr. Britt Baker, D.M.D.


Baker and Soho feel each other out. Soho quickly leaves the ring to regroup. Back in the ring, Baker takes Soho down again. Baker drops Soho with a slingblade. Saraya and Storm distract Baker. Soho capitalizes and slams Baker at ringside. Saraya attacks Baker when the referee isn’t looking. Soho controls the action and grounds Baker. The former champion rallies and drops Soho with a twisting neckbreaker. Baker rocks Soho with a kick. Storm interferes, and Soho suplexes Baker.


Storm helps Soho hit Baker with the title belt, and Ruby gets a near fall with the No Future. Soho tries to trap Baker in the Lockjaw and transitions into another hold. Baker escapes and goes for the Lockjaw, but Storm drags Soho out of the ring. Storm grabs Baker’s leg, but Britt fights her off. Soho stacks Baker up, and Storm holds her down to clinch the pin.


Winner: Ruby Soho


Skye Blue, Soho’s opponent in the next round, confronts her after the bell.


Kenny Omega vs. Wheeler Yuta


Yuta attacks Omega before the bell and takes the early advantage. Omega fires back with some stiff chops. The former world champion hits a modified bulldog. He slams Yuta, but Wheeler blocks a moonsault. Yuta hits a diving dropkick. He dives onto Omega at ringside. Yuta slams Omega into the barricade at ringside. Omega gains some breathing room with a kick. Yuta drives Omega throat-first onto the top rope. He sends Omega into the barricade with a dropkick. Back in the ring, Yuta grounds Omega and continues to control the action. Omega rallies and slams Yuta off the top rope for a two count. Yuta drops Omega with a German suplex. Omega and Yuta keep battling. Omega dumps Yuta with a snap dragon suplex and hits a second one. Yuta gets a two count with a roll-up.


Omega hits the V-trigger and goes for the One-Winged Angel. Yuta counters and nearly gets the win with the Seat Belt. Omega powerbombs Yuta and hits a knee strike for a two count. Callis comes down the ramp and distracts Omega. Konosuke Takeshita sneaks into the ring and slams Omega. Yuta gets a near fall with a splash. Omega perseveres and hits the One-Winged Angel for the win.


Winner: Kenny Omega


Claudio Castagnoli and Takeshita attack Omega after the bell. The Elite (The Young Bucks and Hangman Page) make the save.


Dark Order came to the ring, and Evil Uno took a chair from Hangman Page just as the show came to an end.
